FA chiefs are scrutinising footage of the Manchester United's star shock outburst at West Ham on Saturday.
Striker Rooney, 25, appears to mouth the word 'f***' twice then react angrily to an off-camera remark as he celebrated scoring his hat-trick goal in the 4-2 win at Upton Park.
United team-mate Rio Ferdinand says the striker should not be punished.
Ferdinand tweeted: "Give Wayne a break. He knows what he did was wrong. I spoke to him this morning and he is genuinely sorry."
